The Changing Face of Penrith

Western Sydney is changing at a rapid rate, with significant shifts occurring in the Penrith local government area.

In the past ten years, neighbourhoods have risen from the ground. Supported by an increase in medium and high density housing in key locations, the local population has grown to nearly 220,000.

The profile of Penrith’s residents has changed too. Census data shows levels of educational attainment and diversity are higher than ever, emerging as key assets across the area and presenting new opportunities for businesses.

Policy decisions at all levels of government continue to shape Penrith’s future. The establishment of Western Sydney Airport, with its supporting infrastructure pipeline of major rail and road projects, has the potential to turbo-charge local economies.

As the region continues to build back from COVID, it has never been more important for businesses to make informed decisions about their operations. Understanding the shifts in demographics, government policy and infrastructure planning are critical to business planning and success.

As an authority on the region, the Centre for Western Sydney is your gateway to that knowledge. It puts the voices of Western Sydney first, through conversations, conducting high quality research, and advocacy for the region.

Publication Spotlight

Untapped Talent

The issues paper, ‘Untapped talent: Western Sydney’s remarkable but inequitable labour market,’ features an analysis of newly released 2021 Census data.

The data confirms what many of us in the region already knew: Western Sydney is home to areas of among the most highly skilled, qualified, and culturally diverse workers in the country.

The issues paper also highlights several spatial inequities that remain firmly entrenched in Sydney – relating to education, income levels, and female labour force participation.

Western Sydney Votes

Western Sydney has long been an electoral battleground, at both the state and federal level. The Centre’s Western Sydney Votes series examines voting behaviours and identifies key trends across the region at election time, providing commentary and micro-level data for decisive seats, such as the federal electorate of Lindsay.
